DESCRIPTION:SoP Live are pleased to be able to present Luke De-Sciscio at The Victoria with support from Alternative Folk/Indie Soul musician Leo Baby.\n\nBetween the years of 2014 and 2024 Luke De-Sciscio recorded seventeen full length albums. These songs\, though recorded live and often through no more than a single microphone thrown up at the foot of his bed\, became the tablet upon which he chronicled the seasons of his life.\n\nIt is no small miracle that from that vantage point\, weaving tapestries from behind his guitar\, Luke De-Sciscio amassed over 10 million plays on Spotify\, has been invited to open for legends such as Cat Stevens and Jose Feliciano and become a frequent spin on BBC6MUSIC.\n\nIn March 2024 Luke De-Sciscio welcomed his daughter to the World and over the next six weeks recorded an album that sits amongst the top 50 albums of the year on Album Of The Year.org.\n\nHis music has been described as 'impossibly\, world-stoppingly real' (Marc Schuster) and 'viscerally beautiful' (Real Goblin).\n\nLyrical potency takes centre stage amongst the elasticity of his voice and the born-in grasp of his guitar.\n\nRIYL: John Martyn\, Jeff Buckley\, Van Morrison\, Joni Mitchell\, Bob Dylan\, Cat Stevens or Buffy Sainte-Marie.\n\nSupport from Leo Baby: Through a unique fusion of Alt-folk and Indie-soul\, with irreverent glimpses into gypsy jazz and Latin-inspired beats\, Leo Baby conjures a soundscape that feels both nostalgic and fresh. His music is rich with storytelling and warmth\, drawing audiences into a vibrant world of melody and rhythm.\n\nDoors 7.00pm. Music 7.30pm\n\nAdvance tickets £10.00 available online at seetickets.com or in person at the venue. \n\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/563080382890363/\n\n

DESCRIPTION:We are happy to be able to bring the incredible John Bramwell to Swindon for a special\, intimate show upstairs at The Hop Inn.\n\nJohn Bramwell is perhaps best known as the singer in the cherished\, Mercury Prize nominated Mancunian band\, I Am Kloot. February 23rd 2024 marked the release of the acclaimed\, sophomore album ‘The Light Fantastic‘.\n\nAs the singer in I Am Kloot from 1999 to 2014\, John Bramwell achieved a Mercury Prize nomination for 2010’s The Sky At Night\, a Top 10 chart position for 2013’s Let It All In\, numerous UK and European tours and a triumphant farewell at the Queen Elizabeth Hall with an orchestra in 2014. Now\, as a solo artist\, he’s travelling a very different path\, his stunning new album The Light Fantastic is almost a complete U-turn from his Kloot-days. Darker clouds have been banished\, there are strings and four-part harmonies (a warming development\, since Kloot never had any backing vocals) and a dozen gloriously exhilarating\, beautifully crafted and observed songs about life\, humanity\, the universe and everything. As John puts it\, “It’s been great to find the joy of making music once again. These are the most uplifting songs of my career.”\n\n‘A unique voice both literally and metaphorically’ – Lauren Laverne\n\n‘My favourite songwriter of all time’ – Cate Blanchett [who chose Bramwell-penned ‘Proof’ as\nher Desert Island Disk on the BBC Radio 4 show]\n\n‘The UK’s finest export’ New York Times\n‘Bramwell’s new songs are spellbinding’ The Guardian\n\nAdvance tickets are £22.50 available via seetickets.com\n\nDoors 7.00pm. DESCRIPTION:Joanne Rush is a short story prize-winner\, creative writing consultant\, and Cambridge graduate\, who loves myth and folklore. Her new book\, Dancing on Knives\, is a border-crossing novel with its roots in contemporary history. Set in Bosnia\, it is a timely exploration of exile\, betrayal and the enduring search for home. Near its start is the line\, ‘Stories\, after all\, are only what we bring to the surface. Under it are dreams and monsters.’  Samuel Fisher\, author of Wivenhoe\, is a writer\, bookseller and publisher. He is the owner of Burley Fisher Books in East London and a director of Peninsula Press. His first novel\, The Chameleon\, won a Betty Trask Award and was longlisted for the Desmond Elliot Prize. His third novel\, Migraine\, will be published in July 2025.  In a world not unlike our own\, which is on the edge of survival\, Wivenhoe asks questions. At what point will we admit complicity in our own destruction? If society as we know it is lost\, what would we strive to save? \n\n

DESCRIPTION: After coming a lamentable last on Taskmaster Series 15\, and seeing his emotional frailties laid bare\, Ivo Graham is adapting to an increasingly irreversible reputation as a man better known for his chaos than his comedy.  His new book\, Yardsticks for Failure\, is an exquisite map of the brain behind the breakdowns\, where his solution to the general bedlam of his life has been to pile his plate higher than ever before. Longer-term resolutions of rest and relaxation must wait. For now\, Ivo is trying to host the greatest club night of all time\, run a sub-3 hour marathon while pushing a wheelchair\, and put his heart on the line in a show unlike anything he’s ever done before. Can these dreams become a reality\, or will they just become more yardsticks for failure? A gleeful glimpse behind the grubby curtain of stand-up comedy\; a feast for anyone who’s ever been enthralled or appalled by Ivo’s cursed politeness\; and a unique self-examination from one of the most eloquent writers and worriers of his generation. Maybe future worries and joys will also both come to Ivo through his loyal and longstanding support of Swindon Town FC. \n\n

DESCRIPTION: Does what you read determine how you think\, what you do\, and who you are? Can reading shape our lives? What’s it like to be lost in a good book? What constitutes a good book? Why does Literature last? Any other questions? English professor\, broadcaster\, writer on evolution\, running\, and reading\, Vybarr Cregan-Reid has some answers.  His latest book\, We Are What We Read\, assesses the transformative power of reading good books\, why we should take reading seriously\, how our brains are rewired by books\, the magic of memoir\, and how fiction might be far more real than we think.  Here’s a line from his book. ‘Being yourself requires a lot less effort than trying to be someone and something else. DESCRIPTION:  Based on the information that depression is caused by a chemical imbalance and that antidepressants work by targeting this mechanism\, millions of people have\, for decades\, decided to take antidepressants. But recent research reveals that this diagnosis is not supported by evidence In her new book\, Chemically Imbalanced\, Professor Joanna Moncrieff tells the story of a scientific myth and its consequences. It’s a story that illustrates the power of human interests to shape what passes as scientific knowledge. DESCRIPTION: Swindon is built on a rich bedrock of culture. Its past informs its present. Its writers\, then and now\, have stories to tell. Embedded in Swindon’s railway heritage is the story of Alfred Williams\, an uneducated factory worker with a passion for learning and writing. In his new novel\, The Palace of My Imagination\, local writer John Cullimore explores the life of The Hammerman Poet and the turbulent times through which he lived.  Those times and earlier ones are more widely explored in Made in Swindon: a social history 1840s – 1940s\, edited by Philip Garrahan\, a collection of pieces by six experienced local historians. They capture the spirit of Swindon not only through its pivotal social institutions but also through its art and culture. It moves Swindon’s heritage beyond nostalgia to a place of critical acclaim.  From an agricultural rather than an industrial background comes another of Swindon’s celebrated sons. Nature writer Richard Jefferies\, and his important messages for today\, are celebrated by Mike Pringle through Our Nature\, a collection of words and images by a host of nature-loving writers and artists. \n\n

DESCRIPTION:According to one sacred tome\, in its Psalm 90:10\, ‘the days of our life are three score years and ten\; and\, if by reason of strength\, they be fourscore years . . .’  You may not want to hear anymore of what the Bible says on ageing. But\, if you want to defy what’s predicted in scrolls of two and a half thousand years ago\, then read on. The notion that ageing inevitably causes problems is wrong. Certain things decline in efficiency but other difficulties can be postponed\, nay prevented\, and even improved upon. Why? Because they are not caused by ageing but by loss of fitness\, preventable illness\, negative beliefs\, pessimistic attitudes\, etc.\, etc.\, etc.. In other words\, it is now possible\, for many people\, to live better for longer. How?
